Trump says Iran war "going to stop very soon," promises $5,000 payments to adult citizens at Mississippi rally
The president also made unverified claims about the economy, the U.S. naval blockade and Democrats during a rally for Republican candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.
CORINTH, Miss. — President Donald Trump said at a rally here that the U.S. war with Iran is "going to stop very soon," and promised that if Republicans win the House and Senate he will give every adult U.S. citizen $5,000, a plan he put at about $1 trillion and called the "Trump dividend." He closed his remarks around 8:34 p.m. by urging supporters to "win on November third." The transcript contains no independent confirmation of his claims about the war, the economy or the payments.
Iran war and the blockade
Trump defended the war, saying "I don't feel we had a choice they were two weeks away from having a nuclear missile." He said U.S. strikes had destroyed 159 Iranian ships and that Iran's jet fighters were "scattered all over the runways" in pieces. He also said Iran begins rebuilding "as soon as you stop hitting them." None of these figures was independently confirmed in the transcript.
He said the U.S. now has "total control" and cited a Wall Street Journal front-page report that more oil is moving through the Strait of Hormuz trade than before the war began. He described "the greatest blockade" in naval history and said no Iranian ship had gotten through "in many many months" except during what he called "a little ceasefire." Trump said he never liked that ceasefire and considered it a waste of time. He also said he had expected oil prices to rise much higher and that they are now lower.
$5,000 "Trump dividend"
Trump said "if Republicans win the house of representatives in Senate I am going to give all adult citizens in the United States $5000." He said the money would come from tariff revenue and economic growth, adding "the $5000 Trump dividend is approximately $1 trillion." He said recipients would have to spend it in the United States, joking that they could not "go to France." He gave no details on how Congress would authorize or distribute the payments.
He warned that a Democratic win would bring "a 1929" style depression. He also said every Democrat in Congress voted against the tax cuts, including no tax on tips, overtime and Social Security. The transcript includes no evidence for his broader claims about Democratic positions.
Economic claims and midterm pitch
Trump said the stock market has set 88 record highs since the election, that 401(k)s are up about 60%, and that income, employment and exports are at record levels. He also said poverty rates are the lowest on record, including for several racial and ethnic groups, and that more than 1 million jobs have been created. These claims were not independently verified in the transcript.
He urged the Senate to vote on a bill making daylight saving time permanent. He said the House passed the Sunshine Act 308-117, and that the measure is "locked in the Senate." He urged voters to re-elect Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and attacked her Democratic opponent, Scott Colom, whose policy positions Trump characterized without evidence. He also thanked Gov. Tate Reeves, Sen. Roger Wicker and other state officials.
In closing, Trump said that if Republicans win in November the party would pass the "Save America Act," a ban on sanctuary cities, and a death penalty for large-scale drug dealers. He also said Republicans would "enshrine in permanent law" a ban on men in women's sports. He claimed paid protesters who interrupted him were given $250, a claim offered without evidence. He also said he renamed a lake near Canada "lake America," floated calling the Atlantic "the American ocean," and promised not to rename the Mississippi River.
