Trump closes Michigan rally by promising $5,000 "Trump dividend" if GOP wins Congress, says Iran conflict ending "quite soon"
At a St. Clair County rally that ended around 5:16 p.m., the president also defended the Iran war's effect on gas prices and touted auto-industry investment.
President Donald Trump ended a rally in St. Clair County, Michigan, at about 5:16 p.m. after promising "all adult citizens in the United States" $5,000 if Republicans win the House and Senate on Nov. 3, a payment he called the "Trump dividend." He said it would cost "approximately $1 trillion" and would arrive "very shortly after the election." On Iran, he said, "you'll see that ending quite soon one way or the other."
The $5,000 dividend and the midterm pitch
Trump said only Republicans could deliver the payment, citing tariff revenue and "record setting economic success." He did not say in the portion of the speech transcribed how it would be authorized. "If the Republicans win you'll each have $5000 in your pocket," he said. He added a condition: recipients must spend it only in the United States, and he named France and Italy as places not to spend it. He warned that if Democrats win, "you will have a 1929 style economic depression."
Trump's closing pitch said that if voters elect a Republican House and Senate, "we will continue to put America first." He listed priorities: a "no invasion of our country act," a ban on sanctuary cities, the death penalty for large-scale drug dealers, human traffickers and anyone who kills a police officer, and passage of "voter identification" and "proof of citizenship" measures along with the Save America Act. He also called for enshrining a ban on transgender athletes in women's sports in law.
Iran, gas prices and Hormuz
Trump defended the Iran campaign and acknowledged its cost at the pump. He said he expected prices to rise and that "I thought gas would be double and triple and it's a small price to pay for taking a nuclear weapon away from maniacs." He said the U.S. is "taking more oil out of the Hormuz straight now than we did before." That claim was not backed with figures in the transcript.
He said U.S. forces "obliterated iran's nuclear enrichment capacity" in two named operations, one of them "operation epic fury," and that the U.S. had "defeated them militarily financially and otherwise." He also said "we won the war in Venezuela in one day" and that Nicolas Maduro is "now awaiting trial."
Autos, tariffs and the economy
Trump spent much of the speech on manufacturing. He said his tariffs have produced "more factories and plants being built in the United States right now" than at any time in history. He cited a Ford plant in Detroit he said is running three shifts, seven days a week, a $400 million Stellantis factory in Michigan, $3 billion from Ford into central Michigan and "billions and billions" from GM. He said Audi had announced a $40 billion plant in Macon, Georgia.
He said "Canada has been ripping off the United States for years" and that a trade settlement would come "pretty soon." He said interest on car loans is now tax deductible "only if the car is made in America."
Trump said commitments for new U.S. investment total $22.2 trillion. Later in the speech he put the figure at $22.5 trillion. He also claimed 88 stock market record highs since the election, record income, employment and exports, and inflation at 1.7% "for the last three months." The transcript offers no sourcing for these figures.
Attacks on opponents and crime claims
Trump said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper allowed 88 murderers out of prison during COVID and that 25 committed murder after release. Cooper is running for the U.S. Senate, and Trump said he hopes Republican Michael Whatley wins. He tied one case to DeCarlos Brown Jr. These claims were not substantiated in the speech.
Trump also said "in the past 17 months zero illegal aliens" have been admitted into the U.S. He told the crowd the "murder rate" is at its lowest in 125 years. Near the end of the speech, he attacked a Democratic opponent he named as "abdul mohammed al sayed," calling him "a fake doctor," without offering support for the claim.
A union autoworker brought on stage criticized government-run health care and urged the crowd to vote. His remarks came from an unidentified speaker and are not attributed to Trump. Other warm-up remarks, including those of the rapper Nikki, are likewise not Trump's.
